Fun things you can do on your land.
Go look for ‘fat lighter” AKA heart pine, lighter wood, pine knot or If you’re my helper, Elye, then it’s simply ‘that wood that smells good!” Fat lighter has a great smell when it is split open.
First, I hear some of you asking what in the world is fat lighter?
Fat lighter is simply the heartwood of pine trees, mostly the Longleaf Pine. It is what is left in the stump or core of the trunk after the tree has died. Fat lighter is the sap of the tree that has hardened into a resin.
Second question is why do I want fat lighter?
Because fat lighter is the best fire starter you can find. Yes, even better than the expensive logs you buy at the hardware store.
Also, fat lighter is free, you get to walk thru the woods and your kids like it better than looking for Easter eggs! It’s a gift from God or ‘found money’ if you ever worked for Dr Hank Hall.
How do you know if its fat lighter? Fat lighter looks like an old stump or long skinny piece of wood left from an old rotted tree.
Here’s the test! Try to break it, kick it, stomp on it. Be careful this could be painful. If it doesn’t break or even move then you know you found it.
You can usually find pieces small enough to carry out of the woods, if not you will need to bring an axe or hatchet along with you. When you get home cut the logs into small pieces with an axe or hatchet. Be careful again, the wood if extremely hard and may laugh at you and your axe when you hit it the first time. Cut the pieces about 6 inches in length and about 1” in diameter for best use, add 2-3 pieces into your fireplace under your logs and you will never buy another fire starter again. It will light with a lighter or you can use a couple pieces of paper to help get it started.
You burned a few calories, kids put the video game down and you also saved a few dollars!
That’s a pretty good day on your land!
Do you need help looking your piece of land? I would love to help!
